5-Year Anniversary Staycation

Photo: Andaz Scottsdale

Balance. Like most things in life, I've found that the key to success in our marriage, journey through parenthood and time spent traveling is balance.

It's not always easy to achieve – since Roselyn joined our family, I admittedly haven't been great at prioritizing time for Ryan and I. Though I look forward to our date nights and the quality time we spend together, it's still very difficult for me to leave Rosie. So, like most parents to young children, we don't get out as often as we'd like.

Thankfully, we have incredible grandparents, family and friends that worked together to make it possible for us to have a staycation in Scottsdale to celebrate our 5-year anniversary and the 12 years we've spent together!

We had a great time at the Andaz Scottsdale Resort and Spa – a mid-century modern resort near Camelback Mountain and Old Town Scottsdale – and can't wait to return.

Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Andaz had upgraded us to their Saarinen Bungalow after hearing that we were celebrating our anniversary. They even took the time to send over a complimentary Cabernet Sauvignon and dessert as well!

We had an incredible stay at Andaz Scottsdale and it was great to have time to spend together without rushing through a conversation or meal. Though we missed Rosie so much and were looking forward to coming back home, we also realized that we need to make time for ourselves as well, to be the best parents to her that we can be.

We're looking forward to having dinner at home with Rosie on our anniversary tomorrow and to what the next 5, 10, 15+ more years will bring.

Happy Anniversary, Ryan! I love you. Here's to many more!

Better Sleep With the Newton Baby Crib Mattress

Baby crib mattress courtesy of (c/o): Newton Baby

Although I spent most of my pregnancy designing and prepping Roselyn's nursery, I didn't initially put as much thought as I should have into the baby crib mattress that she'd frequently be using.

It wasn't until after she had already arrived that I began regretting my decision to purchase a common foam/water-resistant mattress and began researching higher-quality options.

My research led me to the Newton Baby Crib Mattressa 100% breathable, recyclable and washable mattress that features a Wovenaire core – which is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer to provide the comfort of foam and latex without any of the drawbacks. There's no chemicals or toxins!

The lightweight mattress is then quilted together using comfortable 3-D Spacer Fabric for maximum airflow which helps regulate body temperature and breathing, keeping baby asleep longer at night.

As Rosie was delivered early and experiences complications that impact her growth and sleep, we've always been concerned about the amount and quality of sleep she gets. That is why we were so excited to try the Newton Baby Crib Mattress and are very happy to share that it exceeded everyone's expectations!

Because it seemed too good to be true, we took the #Breathe2BelieveChallenge to confirm that we could breathe through every part of the Newton Baby Crib Mattress (spoiler alert: you really can!) The mattress has also been independently tested, showing that a baby can get 97% more air while breathing through a Newton Baby Crib Mattress compared to traditional crib mattresses.

Since we've had our Newton Baby Crib Mattress, I can honestly say that everyone has slept better. Rosie is much more comfortable being able to breathe through the mattress and sleep on her stomach at night. Ryan and I can also rest easy, now that we have peace of mind that she's experiencing better, healthier and safer sleep.

I would recommend this mattress to any expecting family or friend. You can find out more about the Newton Baby Crib Mattress, including more information about designs, style and safety, here.

Baby's First Birthday | Cake Smash

I've been simultaneously agonizing and awaiting this moment for months now – and the time has finally come. Roselyn just turned one!

Since I found out that we were expecting a baby, family, friends, neighbors and strangers have been telling me that "babies don't keep" and to "hold onto her as long and as tight as you can." Well, now that one year has officially passed us by, I can tell you friends: it's all true.

We've been asked a few times about how we've been feeling since the big day this week, and in truth, it's a multitude of emotions – something we're quickly learning is synonymous with fatherhood and motherhood. We are so excited to have a toddler and are looking forward to what this upcoming year will bring, but also truly miss the moments when we could kiss or rock our sweet daughter to sleep.

Parenting isn't for the faint of heart, but we're also learning to celebrate the big and little moments too – which is why we chose to commemorate Rosie's first birthday with a cake smash in the desert. We had so much fun working with our friend Valerie, of Valerie Bolitho Photography, again and watching Roselyn enjoy her first taste of cake!

Caitlin Burm on Etsy | Grand Opening

As you know, blogging with a baby can be difficult and I haven't been able to keep up with you here as much as I would have liked this year. Being a full time, working mother comes with its challenges – namely, a lack of time – and although I haven't had the opportunity to write as much as I used to, I found that I was still searching for a creative outlet in between naptimes.

That is why I decided to channel my creativity into doing something that I've always wanted to do – design!

I have been creating designs for our home and for family and friends over the last five years, but this year I decided to do something different and share my prints with the world: on Etsy!

Caitlin Burm Design is now open and I hope you will join me there. I've created a "GRAND OPENING" coupon – 20% off the entire shop – just for you this week.

There will be many more items to come, but in the mean time, see the Etsy listings I have up so far and please reach out if you would like a custom print or quote!

This Is the Time to Remember

"This is the time to remember, 'cause it will not last forever. These are the days to hold on to, but we won't, although we'll want to."

As we enter autumn, I'm reminded of how quickly Roselyn is growing and how time is passing by.

Rosie is officially 6-months-old now, and although I've been taking photos of her each day, we have hardly captured any pictures of the three of us together since she joined our family. That is why we were so happy to reconnect with our friend Valerie, of Valerie Bolitho Photography, for family portraits this month!

Valerie helped us document both our engagement and wedding photos, so it was very special to have her shoot our family of three, now that we're back home in Phoenix again.

We had such an incredible time shooting this season of our lives at the Desert Botanical Garden and are looking forward to doing it again soon.

We've learned that you can never take enough photos of this time with your babe – Roselyn is growing so fast and it's beginning to feel like if we blink, we'll miss it.

Thank you to our friend Valerie for continuing to document these milestones in our lives!

Frida and Diego | The Heard Museum in Phoenix

Hi! How are you? It's been awhile since our last update!

We've been quite busy seeing family and friends, settling in and unpacking boxes at our new home in Phoenix over the last month.

We were grateful to find some time for ourselves to relax amidst meetups and the move, and we chose to spend that time at the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera art exhibit at the Heard Museum this past month.

(Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Exhibit/Heard Museum)

The Heard Museum was founded in 1929 by Dwight and Maie Bartlett Heard, prominent ranchers who collected a significant amount of American Indian art after they settled in the Southwest.

Today, their museum features over 40,000 pieces of Native American art and objects from multiple Southwestern tribes, including the Hopi, Navajo and Zuni.

We had a great time going through all the American Indian cultural exhibits at the Heard Museum, but were most thrilled to see Kahlo and Rivera's masterpieces from Mexico. We had been waiting to see their work in person for some time – Frida has long been an icon in my culture and has been my favorite artist as long as I can remember. So, it felt as if the stars had aligned when our move allowed us to see the exhibit during its last weekend on display in Phoenix – the only North American stop for the gallery, which is on a global tour.

The Frida and Diego exhibit at the Heard Museum was everything we had hoped it would be – nothing short of spectacular!

It was incredible to see Kahlo's iconic "Self Portrait with Monkeys" and Rivera's "Sunflowers," in addition to more than 50 photographs that family and friends had taken of Kahlo throughout her life.

To make the visit even more special, we had our daughter with us, who absolutely loved looking at all the vivid imagery surrounding her. We can't wait to teach her all about her culture and about Frida and Diego one day!

Did you have the opportunity to see Frida and Diego's exhibit?

What was your favorite piece of work?
